The DIAGNOdent is a tool that enables Dr. Winterholler to detect decay early, allowing us to restore your tooth while the decay is still very small. Many of the fluorides that we use in our tooth pastes and mouth rinses can harden the outer enamel, while locking decay down in the pits and grooves of our teeth.

At Winterholler Dentistry we find that often our traditional dental tools are inadequate in detecting decay. Decay that is beneath the surfaces that are hardened by fluoride can often go undetected. That is why we measure each premolar and molar to determine if there is decay beneath the enamel surface. Typically dental x-rays do not detect decay until it is moderate in depth. But using the DIAGNOdent enables us to diagnose decay while it is still very small.

How Does the DIAGNOdent Work?

The DIAGNOdent uses laser fluorescence to shine a light into the tooth. Where there is soft decay the light is absorbed and the DIAGNOdent number is higher. Teeth that are healthy and free of decay will bounce the light back and the number is lower.

During your initial exam we will review our findings and make recommendations if we find that any teeth need restorations. We offer tooth-colored fillings of several types, and one-visit crowns. We can also replace any old metal fillings you may have with white fillings for a more attractive smile.
