Cosmetic Dentistry - Contouring and Shaping

Arizona including Phoenix, Scottsdale and Payson

Ever get an unexpected surprise that just tickles you pink? Sometimes many of our patients are absolutely thrilled when Dr. Chris or Dr. Patrice offer to recontour their teeth. Often teeth that are chipped, jagged or worn just need a little reshaping and they are just like new! It’s like getting a whole new smile!

If you’ve got minor tooth issues that are purely cosmetic, tooth recontouring is a quick, easy and affordable solution. Tooth recontouring, also called tooth reshaping, requires very little time in the dental chair and can usually be performed in one visit. Recontouring is a very conservative treatment choice, meaning it does not affect the tooth structure and very little enamel is removed in the process.

Dr. Winterholler can remove small amounts of enamel, and perform dental bonding to build up teeth, in order to create a more attractive, symmetrical tooth shape. If you have one or more teeth that just don’t fit in well with the others, tooth recontouring is a simple cosmetic dentistry treatment that can make a big difference in how you — and others — see your smile.

Minor cosmetic problems that can be corrected with tooth recontouring include:

  • Small enamel chips
  • Minor shape issues
  • Enamel bulges
  • Asymmetrical tooth shape
  • Pits or crevices in tooth surfaces
  • Irregular tooth shape
  • Uneven teeth
  • Pointy teeth
  • Long or short teeth
  • Enamel overlaps

For more significant tooth problems like breaks or cracks, tooth bonding, porcelain crowns, porcelain veneers, or another procedure may suit you better. Here’s what to expect during your tooth recontouring visit:

  • Dr. Winterholler will evaluate your digital X-rays to make sure that the enamel problem is not a sign of a larger issue and to confirm that you have an enamel layer that is thick enough to withstand small reductions.
  • A special sanding instrument is used to gently reduce the tooth enamel to a more aesthetically pleasing shape and size. Since the procedure is a superficial one, there is usually no need for numbing.
  • When the ideal shape is reached, the tooth is then polished.

Tooth recontouring may be recommended in combination with other smile makeover procedures in order to give you a dramatic smile result.

Remember, even though tooth recontouring is one of the least invasive treatments, it is important that you choose an experienced dentist to ensure an accurate, conservative reduction of enamel.
